Underbite options & growth

# Underbite: what can braces or aligners change?

Braces move teeth; aligners can be considered for selected mild, mainly dental underbites\. A jaw contribution and remaining growth need their own assessment to explain the proposed method's purpose\.

## Braces and aligners move teeth; a jaw relationship needs its own explanation

An underbite describes a front\-to\-back relationship in which the lower front teeth sit ahead of the upper front teeth\. Tooth positions, the relationship of the jaws, or a combination can contribute\. That is why the visible relationship alone does not tell you what a particular appliance is meant to change\.

Aligners may be discussed for selected mild cases that are primarily dental\. Fixed braces are another orthodontic appliance category\. When a jaw contribution is part of the assessment, remaining growth and the intended change enter the discussion as well\. An orthodontist connects those findings with the proposed method rather than choosing a plan from the word underbite\.

## Three questions make the options easier to follow

**What contributes to the relationship?** A statement about front\-tooth positions is different from a statement about the jaws\. Some assessments describe both\. Keep the supplied finding in the clinician's own terms instead of assuming that a similar\-looking bite must have the same explanation\.

**What does the growth assessment contribute?** Remaining growth can affect the discussion of growth approaches\. A child's birthday is not an appliance prescription, and being an adult does not reveal which contribution a proposal addresses\. The assessment supplies that context\.

**What is the proposed method's job?** Aligning teeth, bringing an upper teeth/jaw relationship forward, and widening across an upper arch describe different intended changes\. A useful explanation names the goal beside the method, then identifies the individual's directions and the professional responsible for review\.

## Start with the part of the explanation you need

The first lesson compares two completed, clinician\-assessed fictional situations\. Maya's account includes a mixed contribution and remaining\-growth context; Alex's adult proposal addresses a primarily dental contribution\. The comparison explains why the same broad front relationship does not establish the same plan\.

The options lesson separates method purposes and puts the limits of child\-study evidence beside the possible benefit\. The final lesson follows Maya's complete proposal, answers whether forward change and widening mean the same thing, and shows what her family now understands\.

## A useful proposal connects findings with continuing care

SMILE\-FX® is a full\-service Miramar practice with a digital clear\-aligner focus\. Board\-certified orthodontists see patients, including at follow\-ups\. Planning views and smile previews can help explain a proposal; standard smartphone monitoring and provider support keep continuing care connected\. A preview is not an achieved treatment result\.

These established care policies give you a setting for an individual discussion\. The next useful step is understanding which finding and goal the orthodontist is addressing, with the full care context available in [About this guide](</about-this-guide#care-model-about>) \.
